Pretty proud of this find considering I just started a few weeks ago. Is it as rare as it seems to be on-line? I can't find a lot of information on these and would appreciate any help I can get!

It's brass, rectangular, it's in pretty great shape, found on private family property that we've found quite a few CW items.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the pictures! This is a great find of a Virginia rectangle belt plate, state seal Virtus slaying the tyrant with sword down J S Smith (James S smith) style, stamped buckle. These buckles can sell in the $3,500-$4,000+ range and should not be hard too sell since these are not your everyday run of the mill civil war relics and a good collector would want this! on e-bay anything can happen but to a collector paying top price they normally want to meet up and look at it and then buy it from you. I would take good care of her and any confederate state seal rectangle buckle you find are basically once in a life-time finds you almost have better odds playing the lottery then digging one up and thats no joke!

On a side note if you have any measurements of the buckle please post also! Thanks :occasion14:

Thank you everyone. I don't mean to be a jerk but maybe it's just beginner's luck. Fortunately, my family has a very large farm that's never been touched and it was known to have CW camps there. According to a cousin's book regarding my family tree, I had at least 6 great-great-great uncles (all brothers) that were in the CSA. I think I'll hang on to this piece since the consensus is that it's pretty rare. I REALLY appreciate everyone's comments and wish you all lots of luck on your hunts!

I'll mention also- you might be new but you recovered the piece like a pro.
Flip side would have been a potential heart breaker....
