Help With Flat Button

Got out to an old foundation in the woods near my house yesterday. The only real keeper i found was a one piece flat button. It has a plain front but the back reads: London followed by three stars(?) that kind of look like asterisks. The button is 3/4" in diameter. Any idea when these were made? It might help me date the site.

Also found a tuning fork shaped pie ce of iron. It is 2" long. Any idea what this might have been used for?

Early 1800s would be my guess on that type/style of button. Those are always fun to find. Don't know about the other object.

yep, that other piece is from a Jew's harp, as indicated by VERMONTIS

Thanks for the response. Now that you mention it, I do recognize it from ones I remember seeing as a kid, but they were a little larger.

Early 1800s would be my guess on that type/style of button. Those are always fun to find. Don't know about the other object.

Yep Wildcat is right that button would date more of less to the very early 19th century and possibly late late 18th C. (1795-1820)

Looks like eary 13 colony NY to me. The harp is 1770-1820.

That's great news and earlier than I would have guessed. I'm looking forward to getting back there before it gets too grown up and tick laden.

I'm glad I carry back a lot of questionable items like this harp, which I was calling a piece of mystery iron. This item and the button make for a very human tie to this old hole in the ground with a jumble of rocks around it.

It could be an early cellar hole !! Also look for a well and out house. The pic i sent also has some old glass that I found close by to the harp.You didn't have a garbage man once a week so you dumped your trash some where....over a bank or hill.=ED
