Best Eyeball Find.....

With the nasty weather upon most of the country, many of us are unable to get out to detect. I thought it would be fun to show your best find without the aid of a metal detector.

One of my favorites came this summer at a park while scoping out a potential site during my lunch hour. I found this sterling ring sticking out of the ground. It is a nice men's "No.9" (engine company?) ring, weighing 7.6 grams.

ive made a couple neat coin finds, i found a blank penny (blank planchet) once at work, we were "snapping" pennies and i noticed a blank. once i found some marbles and a wheatie and an indian head at a site where a bunch of old houses were torn down. (had a detector but just wasnt into detecting at the time ) and another time i found a 1904 barber quarter washed out of some dirt on a construction site, did take the detector back but didnt find anything.

Here's mine

It's .925 silver and very heavy..I found it laying in the grass while detecting 2 days after an outdoor carnival held on church grounds. I saw a guy MDing the day after the fair, but I didn't go there until the following day..he probably walked right over it.

Easy one for me, back in 1979, even though I did have a Heathkit detector at that time and I think I had a whole quarter and few pennies found with it that year, I was not detecting the day I found this King George Copper.

I was in the middle of the Pine Barrens of NJ, bowhunting, we were doing a 3 day camping/hunting trip. (more of a get together of 3 guys than hunting)

Anyway, I was on my way to my stand for the evening and the roads there are old 18th century stage roads that went basically from Philadelphia towards points at the Jersey Shore area. The roads are pure white sugar sand and as I was walking to my stand, I was always on the look out for Cape May Diamonds that are found throughout our area (Quartz crystals rounded by glacier action).

I saw this coin lying on the side of the road in the loose white sand. I picked it up and had no idea what it was, I thought it was a Roman coin at the time LOL! Shows what little knowledge I had back then of coins.

So, this coin was my first of many and probably is the main reason for my passion for colonial coins and artifacts since that October afternoon in 1979. BTW, I did not find my first one with the detector until 1984!

Hmmm, can't remember all the things I've found eyeballing. Probably the most valuable, at the time anyway because I was running low on cash, was a $20.00 bill in a Forest Service campground. It looked as if it had been exposed to the weather for quite some time because it was faded and dirty, but it spent like it was brand spanking new. LOL Yep, that was a lucky and welcome find that day.

The writing on the inside ("Sterling" on one side, "Mexico" on the other) is in the same direction . There was also an engine company No.9 right up the street. I called there and spoke to the captain to try to find the owner. He said no one was missing a ring, but "why dont you drop it off and I will ask around". I declined to leave it, but left my number. I never heard from them.

Don: THat is a great coin. I have been to that same area and every time I find something great there. I even eyeballed a colonial flat button in the same area you found the coin. The dirt roads are constantly getting churned by 4x4's and erosion and the occasional plowing by the Dept of Forestry. When the ground freezes up(soon, I think), I will return to the soft sugar sands of the barrens.

Great idea with this thread Neil. Eyeball finds are fun. If it is a cool enough find one can just go on home with no guilt......or not!! Here is my coolest eyeball find yet. It is a Scovill Model 1907M. It was fired from a 3" artillery gun. On the other side there is a set of dash-ed numbers with a 17 at the end. Camp Logan opened in 1917. I found this at 'Randy's place'.

my best was an 1842 Large Cent that I found laying on top of the ground at my sweet spot. FOund it a week to the day after digging an 1853 LC out of the ground. Was on the side of a path maybe 20 feet away from the one I dug.
