Had a great late afternoon hunt yesterday. Found a nice little button marked "Imperial orange gilt", a lead ball, an iron buckle frame and another piece of a buckle (guessing) and a "snap" looking piece. On the way to the truck I decided to hit the area behind my truck (only because it was shaded)! First signal turned out to be the Cooper coin! This is my first but the second coin like this from this site. My buddy Jdsly found a 1772. Love this hobby!!

The front of the King George III is one of the nicest I've seen--congrats! What happened to the reverse?

What kind of site was it and what state are you in?

This is our second site we hunt in SC. Both areas we are hunting keep giving up some great finds. Im blessed to live within a couple miles of either site!

Don't know why the back is so rough. Haven't done anything to it that's the way it came out of the ground yesterday.

The reverse was probably weakly struck to begin with, then add in a little wear and corrosion and voila. It's a counterfeit by the way.... which definitely allowed for less quality control.

Looks great, and needs no cleaning at all. Fantastic condition on that KGIII!

Congrats,

Just out of curiosity, how can you tell by looking at it? I'm not yet well versed on how to ID a counterfeit KG, though I've read that there were supposedly lot of them around at the time. Thanks for any info!

As stated by IP, a nice one as well.

That is a beauty! Keeper for sure. Counterfeit just makes it more interesting. That South Carolinian soil seems to preserve coins well. A lot of nice looking coins have been posted over the years from SC. Congrats!

I've seen them so many times counterfeits stand out. Here's a more regal/genuine looking one. Even it could be counterfeit, just a better quality one.
