Looking at your photos and to me it appears that is a cut piece of a Spanish Reales, not sure of demonination due to size issue in photos, but the D looks like it matches the positioning of the Bust side of a Carlous III or IIII era 4 or 8 Reales with the outline of the nose area near it, the Reverse looks like part of the crown, and both would match for positioning of a Reales. If it is, not being silver is not uncommon, a large percentage of them are counterfeits from that time period and would be debased silver or a high grade pewter. It looks like there was a design on the edge which also makes me think spanish silver.
You made a very nice find.....

As far as IP thinking it could be geniune, that is possible, cut coins tend to read much lower on detectors so your "nickel" range reading could be from it be in that shape. I have cut in half coppers that read much lower on the Explorer SE than a whole coin.

Don thanks a ton man, your right I just looked those up and your dead on, and yes I found it in the water! So makes sense!! Thanks again

I know you can't see it in the photo but there's an I next to the D, no it's not the more I look at it it's an E that's been cut in half

Just tried to call you brother :) That 2 bits is perfect to try the aluminum foil technique on -- just wet the silver and wrap tightly in foil for a minute or two. It should get warm. Unwrap and it should smell like rotten eggs. Clean with mild dish soap and repeat as necessary. If it doesn't clean up then it's counterfeit. Won't damage the value in this case. Gimme a shout! ;)

I was told there are counterfeit Mexican 8 reales by Mark Parker who identified my coin in my profile picture its more than likely a counterfeit unless it is copper like another person posted.

I was marine corps force recon and guns saves my live! I am a master gunsmith, I did 3 tours in the Middle East and was almost killed my third now I'm 100% medically retired and did all that for you and myself included to be able to own as many guns as one wants! Rather its zero or 421 now! I collect them a lot are older weapons from the 1700 , 1800s!

Hi - Let's see the cleaned up bit when you have a chance. Looks like it represents 1/8th or an 8 real...2 bits whould have been a quarter.

Listen here Erik don't rush me!! Lol!! An I'm kiddin ill get them up, I just came upon a killer civil war site I went back today and found a nice period pin and 3 more musket balls and two minis, I'm praying to pull a couple cannon balls and maybe just maybe a CSA belt plate, that plate has eluded me for years

My opinion is that what you have is a 45 deg wedge cut from an 8 reale from around the late 1700s, but it's definitely a period counterfeit as the silver plating has worn off. These are not unusual finds. I found a thick 90 deg wedge from an authentic 8 reale last winter and it rang up very high on the conductivity scale (85 on my F75) as you would expect with silver (see pic below). I've also found other period counterfeits that have been made of pewter that came in around the nickel range like yours. And I dug half of a counterfeit 8 reale 3-4 months ago that registered high but was obviously fake (see pics below). That one was made from some sort of high conductivity pot metal that sounded like it could be silver. Anyway, yours is still a very cool and desirable find so don't be discouraged about it not being a genuine Spanish silver coin.

Bill, He said the oxidation reacted well with the aluminum foil and clean it so I believe what he found was actually silver. Though I'm looking forward to seeing the cleaned version if he ever gets around to posting a pic! LOL :laughing7: -- Sorry Jeremy, couldn't resist 8-)
