for American makers marks
specially hard to find colonial ones
silversmiths/goldsmiths & pewtersmiths
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~silversmiths/

if you cant find it - drop him a line and he'll help you
if you have some items that you already identified and he has maker lisited
he probably love to add a pic of the item(s) to his site
He is not a TH'er - you wont have to divulge sites where found
he wants to catalog as many of these items for historical reference
he may be able to tell you more about your item(s) than you know

AWESOME! I've got a silverspoon with a clear makers mark that I'll send him. I'll mention your post!

Thank you for the notice here of my little research project. I will be happy to assist folks with identifications, if I can.

Here is the silver spoon I found back in 2011. Are the initials WGAL?

I think your site is awesome. I found this Sugar/Salt shovel this year and can't find anything out about the maker of it. The name on the back says L. K HILLS, sorry for the upside down pic my old computer crashed and these are the pictures I have of it. Thanks for looking and helping if you can.

Nice little piece and a mark I have not seen before. I checked all my standard references without joy. The form is quite typical and made from the late 1820s on to the end of the coin era. Can you give the city/county and state where it was found? That might give a starting point for additional searching.

I do love a good mystery.

That is how I would read it, but the last just might be an S with a decorative flourish added -- quite tricky those L's and S's. If the latter, it may be an W-- G-- Agricultural Society prize; people with double middle names, though not unheard of, were fairly rare in the mid-nineteenth century and I have seen other pieces from societies with similar initialing. Can you provide a city/county location where found?
