well, well, surprise, surprise, the detecting god does exist

as many of you know by now, Iron Patch got a really great button yesterday

I thought that I got skunked out with just a large cent find( nothing great for a Rev War site )

I did however find a few flat buttons and what I thought was just a large cent, well it was not a large cent, in fact a French cinq centimes 1894, same size as our large cents and probably passed as one, so, a pleasant but not earth shattering find

then I looked harder at a button I got, I thought briefly in the field there was detail on it, then dismissed it, since IP had what was an unbelievable find, my expectations for something dashed away

so, I cleaned up my pouch and the buttons I found this morning
wow is all I can say now, got a nice button and didn't even know it

could be an 1812 generals button

I guess the Iron Bros. are still alive for 2013

Yes, it is an 1812 Generals button, and a nice one at that. The gilt sure hid well on that one!

It is amazing sometimes what we discover after the clean up. My largest, 33mm navy and those two CMed coins from the other day, were all just "blanks" when I found them, it was only later at home that they were "discovered".

You know that's twice this fall I've discovered a good find after the fact, I would rather find it in my pouch later than have never found it at all

Since this is new button in my collection now, I have to do research on its exclusivity, designation of rank and branch of service

The devices used seem to represent a sword and telescope, my guess, research will tell the tale

I just found something, say rare, same as those on Isaac Brock's coat at the Canadian war museum. Cru not have seen one is a good sign, and your is so much better than the one I found on line.

Backmark: ""IOHN-WILLIAMS"rm(24mm)
- This is a fantastic and RARE War of 1812 British General Officers Button, found in Kingston. It is in excellant dug condition. This is a one piece early convex style button. The front showing rope style border on the outside, and the floral leaf coming up from the bottom of each side. Inside the wreath has the classic sword and Baton crossed. The back is in very fine shape with the raised back mark. Also has the full stank up shank in tight conditionp
This is a scarce button, and to be excavated in America, even more so. This type of button is the same as those on Isaac Brock's coat at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa Canada

That's a genuine button you have there! I can only dream about finding such artifacts like that. Actually recently I had a bullet that I found years ago, didn't think much of it. Decided I may as well ask if anyone on t-net knew about it and it's era and it turned out I have a bullet from the Civil War era!!! My first artifact from that time period :') I also have a military button from the same area that is from WWI US Army. It's amazing how much these things can surprise us.

What a great find. I would think if it's a general's button, it's gotta be rare as hens teeth to find one. But then, what do I know, I have no hope of ever finding something that historic. We haven't got that sort of history out here in the west, although there is the rare Phoenix button, which was for Napoleon's army, and when he lost, the buttons were traded to the Indians. After the 1964 flood on the Rouge River, a number of Phoenix buttons were found, still attached to leather, and were probably washed out of a grave. I've seen the buttons in a museum in Klamath Falls, but those are the only ones I've ever seen. So in the long run, I eat my heart out at what you guys find back there. Keep it up, I love to read about your finds.

Mine is similar, no doubt, sword and baton, ok
Mine has the rope edge too, although its only a hair over 23mm and the back mark is treble gilt
