I got a copper penny signal in my backyard (Which is from the 1800s). I dug down a little and found an oil lamp. I dug some more and found dishes, and bottles. I kept digging in that spot and found a total of 4 oil lamps, a chamber pot, 4 buckets of broken glass and broken dishes, a brass barrel spigot, a brass lock plate, two 1850s gutta-percha lice combs, two silver plated spoons, a cigar pipe, many bottles, two porcellan mason jar lids one from around 1858 with errors, and another from around 1872, I also found all of the pieces of a ceramic 1 gallon jug that just needs to be glued together,My weirdest find was a intact cork, and much more. After doing research I found out that all of the items were from 1851-1895. Many of my finds are not pictured in this post. I can not wait for the ground to unfreeze so I can dig again.

Not all finds are shown (One Cocoaine bottle for example), and this year (2014) I found more finds.

I would LOVE to have something like that on my own property. Number one goal when buying a house is old property!

Maybe an old trash dump or cellar hole ? Keep showing those finds. Very interesting.

Right next to where the bottle are, is a foundation of an old barn. Maybe you are right.

Any ideas on the age of the cruet set would be great, I found it's 5 piece pewter turning holder, but It is very toasted.

That's a very nice selection of bottles already, and being so handy being in your back yard allows you the time to dig at your pleasure.

Update: I cleaned the dirt out of all of the bottles, and put them in the shelves in our dining room.

Coinman, nice post and congratulations on your finds. The good folks in the bottle department would love to see them I'm sure. If you have the time, repost in the bottles/glass forum. Take some good photos of the werner's, thats a great find. Congratulations, and yes you are likely in a privy.

In your back yard? That's a vulgar display of good fortune if I ever saw it. Quick, go buy some lottery tickets. :laughing7:

That's what "one man's trash is another man's treasure" really is about! :-)
