I assume that is each side of the same copper, and if so, I think you have something interesting. It's a bust facing right, but your other picture, not the ribbon one. So if that is a ribbon, and another bust facing right, it's something that's overstruck, likely an American Colonial/State copper. Bit of a puzzle for this one.

Here's what i believe is the bust facing right, and if that's correct it supports the theory above (being non brit) because it doesn't really look like the typical George III bust.... but of course there's not much to go on.

Well that's certainly an interesting idea!

Here's what I pictured, but it's so hard to tell and I don't know the coin well at all

I'm quite sure the pic I posted is the correct orientation of the obverse. It's the other side that's the puzzle.

Thanks! I never dreamed of having such a great day detecting, and I got to do it with my dad. Poor guy only got a 64 rosie and some wheaties, but it did find another one of those pre-1820s buttons in the same yard. Doesn't compare to my day but then again, he's using my old F2, and I have a lot more detecting hours under my belt. He'll get the hang of it.

Anyway, funny thing about the cow picture. My father in law was watching my detect at his sister's farm, and when I knelt down to dig the things just came out of nowhere and gathered to watch! I had no idea they were there when he snapped the pic!

Happy Hunting!

Ohh I see

that IS an interesting though, and might help explain why there seem to be strange markings above the ribbon.

Duh... Must be a 1700s Large cent. I think you were on the right page to start, and I was 100 mines sideways. The bust just didn't look right to me, but being a large cent makes total cents. So the only think being overstruck was my braincells!

The profile of the bust side is what threw me off, because I just didn't see it being an American large cent... and once that left my mind, all that was left was some pretty weird options. But as soon as I realized there was two sides to the ribbon, then it became a whole lot clearer. If you're going to find a 1700s coin sure ain't nothing wrong with it being a large cent!

If you look really closely too you can see the 1/100, or at least part of it. (right below the ribbon) I totally agree with the bust side, it just doesn't look right to me no matter how I look at it.

I agree too, personally there is no 1700s coin I think I would rather find.

Wear and corrosion can definitely play tricks on your eyes, but often times, such as in this case, there's other clues that point to the correct ID.

All very cool finds, could you educate me to what you are pointing at in the first pic? I was thinking it was the 1866 Indian reverse, but when I went on the NGC coin explorer I could not find that on a 1866 IH?
