My Son Found a Drill & I don't Mean Craftsman

My Son has been clearing an old fencerow with a dozier between our farm & my Uncle's place. While he was building a new fence, he looked down & eyeballed this Native American flint drill. Tnmountains (who I consider quite an authority on N.A. artifacts) says it could be any time period from Woodland to Archaic as drills were used as tools in all of them.
We frequently find points in areas where Native Americans hunted away from likely camp sites but the drill was a good distance from a water source as shows up today. HH, Q.

Very nice piece indeed. Narrow tools like that are relatively easy to break, not even counting rolling around them on a dozer. Congratulate your son on a really nice eyeball find.

That's a nice looking drill Quindy. I like to eyeball the occasional Indian artifact.

Richard, the box below is OUR box & includes a Lost Lake point that my Dad found in our Cumberland River bottom before the Corps bought it for the back up for Old Hickry Lake. My son now has his own box so the drill will go into it. He has been picking up points since he was 5 years old. He would go with me when I started hunting for CW relics & look in plowed fields for points while I detected. Thanks & HH, Q.

Thanks OD. I grew up on the Cumberland River and loved to find arrowheads. That led me to detecting. Now, no till farming & the tobacco buyout has minimzed the plowed land to search for artifacts. Indirectly, that has hurt CW relic hunting in that farmers used to eyeball CW relics in plowed ground & tell someone including me-LOl. HH, Q.

That is a nice drill. That is the way I started, huntin' arrowheads. It wasn't until a year and half ago that I got into the more historic artifacts with the detector. I started flintknapping so much, that I almost completely quit looking for points all together. Great find!!

You probably get tired of seeing me post the fact, but I grew up on the Cumberland north of you in Ky, so I understand your sentiments about farmers and how their practices have changed. I have kicked many bits of flint spied in a tobacco patch to see if it was a good point!

That's a great find. Your son should be really proud of it. I'm seeing it as the centerpiece of his display case.
