Sometimes it pays to be stubborn! Last year, I found a Sterling silver rosary in the woods next to my house. It was in a 1930's dump that had Model A Ford parts, bottles and many other religious items as well. Why anyone would throw away their religious items is beyond me.

The rosary was really nice, but it was missing the crucifix. So I've checked out this spot at least 10 times over the past year. Never found the crucifix, until today! It was 7 inches down and in with some nails, which is why I didn't find it sooner. The fact that we've had a lot of rain over the last two days may have helped as well.

Here's some pics. It cleaned up really nice, but I'll have to clean it at least once more to get the last of the tarnish off.

I would say 1930's, at the latest. Everything I've found at this spot has been pre-1940. It has an "H.W." makers mark and "Sterling" below the mark. Lots of jewelry makers in Rhode Island, but I haven't tracked that particular mark down yet.

Thank you! The best part was the fact that the rosary didn't have "Sterling" stamped on it, so finding the crucifix confirmed the fact that it is Sterling silver.

One of my better finds, even if it took me a year to find it all!

Thanks for all the great replies! I knew you guys would appreciate this find! By the way, I've found 19 religious items at this spot. Who the heck would throw away that many religious items (or any religious items, for that matter)?

Well these religious items that you've found may have been mistakenly included with rubbish in a bag or box that was discarded .
