Maybe this rock was used to start fires by ancient man or to assist in using an awl to punch holes in jewelry pieces! Just a few guesses on my part. When in that area look for some other man-made tools. It could also be a natural chemical reaction depending on the rock composition too especially if it is limestone or another carbonate!

It looks like a weird animal skull.

I don't actually believe that it is but it sure looks like one.
