Nice Indian Head Penny.

And a mystery coin that hit like an IHP. Baffling because it was about the size of a nickel.:icon_scratch:

After scrubbing it with several tooth picks to remove the encrustation...it makes sense. Note the "S" mint mark above Monticello.

It is a nickel! I can see Monticello, which is on the back of a Jefferson nickel.

P.S. sorry, I'm VERY tired! Should have read your whole post! Time for bed, I guess.

Nice hunt.

Indian heads are always great and there's nothing wrong with war nickels. Silver is silver no matter how it appears.

Yes...it's a nickel. I was referring to the mint mark above Monticello, indicating that the Nickel is 35% silver. That explains why it hit with a high VDI number.

War Nickel 1942-1945. they ring up in the high 60's on the Atpro, just like indians.

I dug one (and only one) a couple of months ago. When it came out of the ground, it was tarnished black just like yours. It took a few minutes to figure out that it was a war nickel.

Nice save. GL&HH.

Nice pocket knife and silver! Were you at the tear out again? Im heading down there tonight, they've been digging and moving dirt around so i figure hopefully some items have been pushed to the surface. Hope to see you out there! P.S. Im heading up towards Mackinac country this weekend and have some promising leads, wish me luck! HH

Yep, pulled a War Nickel Sunday. Had to scrape off the black gunk to see the date. Second one I've dug like that.
