What a great find. My bet would be 1890's through 1920's, and one of those things, can't remember the name that ladies wore at their waists to carry things maybe.

wow that is beautiful. being intact, I would tend to believe the value as an antique would exceed melt value. that is really cool. congrats!

My first thought when I saw it was a little vial to hold a loved ones ashes in. The only reason that came to mind was because everyone at my grandpa's funeral got one that was very similar in size and shape. I thought it was a little creepy and weird. Plus I'd never seen or heard of anyone doing that before. You may have a piece of your ancestor in there :). AWESOME piece by the way!

A matchbox? The first matches patented were early-1800's I think. :icon_scratch:

I think the two above who mentioned hanging at a ladies waist and a needle container are right...it looks like part of a chatelaine

My guess :) Mans toothpick holder... and A NICE one ... this is 100% custom made for the owner with gun style engraving... Could be as early as the mid to late 1700's... but prolly no later than 1820's... center larger ring of chain would have been for the fob to connect... the fob failed if there even was one and the reason you have found a truly KILLER antique. Somone wasn't happy about loosing this one.

That's a very cool find. Any gold is good but nicely decorated old gold is excellent
