I decided to go look for a spot for a second fall hunt for my metal detector club Metal Detectorists & Archaeological Society . I started looking through tax records I have access to for homes built prior to 1850 to zero in on a general location. Then I looked up farms in the area as well as looking at online maps and aerials. Came up with one that looked good. Figured I'd take a look and hopped in my car and off I went. About an hour later I arrived and drove up the driveway. As luck would have it the owner was just going from the barn to one of the fields and I caught him. I introduced myself, told him a little about the club and asked about getting permission to hunt. He was quite receptive as he was going to be paid for the inconvenience. After we agreed I asked him if anyone had been there with metal detectors. My heart sunk when he said there were a couple of guys, but he didn't think they knew much about their detectors or had very good ones. I asked if I could poke around a bit as I didn't want my club driving over an hour only to end up at some hunted out spot. He said no problem, go ahead. After about 10 minutes or so I get a decent signal and low and behold out pops a 1782 one real. Although I've found half reales and 2 reales, I never found a one real. It wasn't far from the house so I thought either this was a one off fluke or this could be a great spot. I figured instead of concentrating in this one spot I would float around the fields and other areas to see what they might produce. I detected for about an hour and didn't get many decent signals until out pops a 1888 Seated Dime. It was at least 100 yards from the first coin. I figured that's good enough for me to think this could be a great hunt for the club. If this place was detected, it obviously wasn't done that well. I packed up my detector and off I went, satisfied it would be worth the trip for our club members. I also found an old toy truck front end and a half dollar sized collector token. Turned out trying to do something for others paid dividends.

You guys and your Spanish play money! Ha! Nice seated AMERICAN silver with full Liberty. Come on people.....where's your patriotism? Lol, j/k btw......I haven't found Spanish, so you guys just carry on....I will be over here by myself.
I hope the spot is a very memorable one for your club....cudos to you for your research....I hope your club understands the effort you have put into it.

Thanks Old Dude. As I'm a Realtor I have access to certain online tax records. I searched for large old properties and did a corresponding search for farms in the area. Put 2 and 2 together, got in my car and took a ride. My club loves hunts and we've managed to have some good ones. Just this year we've found colonials, Spanish silver, large cents, seated coinage, 3 cent silver, Barbers, mercs, Indians and a whole lot more. Here's some of the things only a few of the guys found from just one of our hunts. I love seeing people finding great items.

It's a hell of a lot of fun watching others finds great stuff. I get so much enjoyment out of it. There's a guy here in a Maine that bought a T2 and tracked me down to ask if I could give him a few pointers. So one day I just met up with him and showed him what I knew. He'd never found anything very old before and he's a super nice guy. So I made it my mission to put him on a great site. I took him to an island with me and he pulled an old copper(his first) and a beautiful very old toy cannon. It was so cool when we cleaned up his copper and it was an awesome Mass cent. He was so damn excited and so appreciative. It was priceless. The crazy part is that I had just found my first Mass cent the weekend before. This hobby is so unpredictable.
You are doing a great thing and giving people opportunities they prob otherwise would never have. That's the epitome of being unselfish which is a great trait. You're a good Don. Keep up the good work

Thanks Don. Although I've found a number of half reales and a couple of 2 reales, this is my first one real. It was fun to find and I think this will turn out to be a great club hunt.

I've not found a 1 real either, most of mine are 2 reales, and 1 half real, funny how it works, that is never got a one real before today. Will post up a pretty decent hunt soon.

Good on you finding sites for the group.

And about the site having hunted before doesn't mena the guy before you did a bad job, it's just easy to miss stuff. The spot we were at today we've done a half dozen times, and I think we got more non-ferrous targets today than any time previously (head scratch)

Ya know I went to one group hunt awhile ago and there was a fenced in area where like 50 half dollars were planted. You'd be amazed how long it took for them to all be found. It is so easy to miss stuff. This colonial spot where I just found the 12 buttons, shoe buckle and Draped Bust I could have easily missed. Most targets were masked with iron and it wasn't until after I found a nice clear signal that proved to be a nice old button that I slowed way down and some of these targets became more obvious. But if I was just rolling through there hunting around I could have easily gone right over that great spot. This island is over 100 acres and there's no history about the site I found. It just makes me wonder how many times I have missed a killer spot. That's the only problem with the hunting I've done recently. I've been hitting riversides and old islands with no specific sites. You really have to kind of get lucky and hit a nice iron patch or make a nice old find to let you know that you may be in a great spot. If you just happen to not get your coil over one of these targets you'd never have a reason to believe you were in a hot spot. Ok that's enough of my rambling for now. :-)
