Got out to my first field in Southern Ohio since 2012. Spent the last couple of years further north and the age of items hasn't been what I want. I've spent all summer researching sites and gaining permissions. I hope this year will be a good one for me. For 20+ years the previous farmer who owned this field didn't farm the land and just let it grow up. The new owner is still in the process of bulldozing the trees and brush out of there. Right now the field is straight dirt and roots. Tough digging. I actually found the site pretty easily because the site's well happened to collapse in the middle of the field. Owner had no clue the well was there when I told him. This house was tore down before 1880.

I started gridding the site and went east and west the first pass. I ended up snagging the 185? Large Cent, buttons, and the cool lead awl. I also ended up getting the possible War of 1812 Pewter button. It has a letter on it but I cannot make it out since its cut in half.

Gridding the other way, I got the 1840 Half Dime right off the bat. It was obviously in a fire cause its blistered and really tarnished. More buttons showed up including some sweet Civil War buttons, and my favorites: The three beautiful convex buttons.

I too enjoy detecting in Southern Ohio but have never done the open fields. Lot of old farms now gone and developed. Oldest coin found in Springboro was an 1841 Seated Liberty dime. Buried at a long gone fountain used to water horses along the old carriage road. Found a handmade lead pipe to the fountain and coin was below that between it and rock. Needless to say...but I tugged and removed the pipe then found the coin--all freshly scratched due to it being pinched between the pipe and the rock. Also found some nice Civil War relics at Camp Dennison. Southern Ohio has been good....

Looks like research paid off, those fields are always fun can't wait for them to open up around here.
