Hello All,

As usual, targets were thin today, but what I didn't get in quantity I made up for in quality. Here's the video:

During the first 3 hours I ended up with a piece of a brass stirrup and a decorated trigger guard from an early musket. Nothing else but can slaw, big iron, pack rivets, and some little bits of lead. Then I got a really killer signal right in the bottom of a cane row and popped out a pistol!! :headbang:

Detected for another hour and a half and finished up the day with a decorative bit of brass and a lone flat button.

The gun looks like it is stamped "M" on the bottom of the barrel. I *think* I can see the oval and bench mark for Liege, but this is a much bigger gun than a muff pistol. I'm so stoked to have dug this one. :)

Was very happy to see a design on the trigger guard, which confirmed that that was what it was (star design). That's why I always toothpick these, rather than use water on them, so that I can see the detail. 8-)

Happy Hunting,

Buck

Was that pistol made mainly of brass, have little knowledge on the old guns here. Looks like a super finding tho =)

It was not uncommon to find brass barrel weapons from that time frame, especially boot pistols. The other boot pistol I dug several years ago even had a screw-on barrel. Strange, huh?

Very cool find, I thought it was funny how you were doubting yourself weather it was a gun or not in the video. I guess you were thinking it might of been a toy gun?

Sometimes I'd rather leave it open ended on the video rather than say "it's definitely a ____________" and then have that wrong ID on there forever. The vast majority of what I find I can ID on the spot, even obscure stuff, but sometimes I'm not 100% certain. If this gun had been smaller in size I'd have been more certain out in the field. We find lots of agricultural parts, water pump parts, levers, hooks, couplings, etc. Sometimes those parts can be mistaken for good finds, too.

UPDATE: The barrel is marked "JM" on the underside, and it does bear the Liege mark. I have not heard of an initial benchmark on a boot pistol before. Anyone have any ideas?

I was just noticing that I could cleanly fit a 44 cal colt down into the barrel, but was afraid to try anything larger. So, it's a fairly large caliber pistol. I'm assuming it shot a conical ball. With a barrel that short, certainly meant to be a close range weapon.

A cheap one until I can decide on a very good brand-name one to buy.

The JM mark could stand for Joseph & Jacques Moray.

I wish I knew. It's such an odd shape, with such a short barrel. I'd love to see a non-dug one in a photo!
