Cool old license plate found at old California mine

Dug this at Shawmut mine not the most exciting thing but I think its neat and cleaned up better than I expected.

Thanks guys also found a old intact jar from the time period a smashed carbide miners lamp with all the dates and stuff on it

I notice from the reverse view it was a 1947 plate, why have they then covered the front with a '50' for 1950?

In the US it's common to keep the same plate for several years and just have it renewed every year. These days they give you a decal with the year on it. Back then some states used a simple metal tag. I believe the practise was begun in WWII when metal was in big demand. Here is what the state of New Hampshire used.

The carbide miners lamp has seen much better days but I kept it because it link to the mines history and my mother works at an assisted living home and she shows a lot of what I find to the old folks and they enjoy it so I get the joy of my finds being useful but here's the other finds.

That license plate is in such good shape. All of the licence plates I finds are extremely rusted, some of them are broken due to so much rust making them brittle, other times there are rust holes all over them. One thing in common with all the license plates that I find are that they are all brownish red rusty sheets of metal. Right now my oldest licence plate is a 1936 tractor licence plate, my oldest car license plate is from 1939-1940.

That's pretty cool before I cleaned it I thought it would be completely trashed considering not only being buried deep but that it was once under a river the drought here in California had so much area exposed that would usually be under water
