Old Pocket Watch

I found my first pocket watch today. I knew what it was as soon as i saw it lying in the dirt. I'm so stoked that I found it. I walked literally within INCHES of it countless times with the detector. I found it roughly 25 feet from a old railroad so could it be a conductor's pocketwatch? If you can tell me anything about its age i'll be very appreciative.

If you clean the dirt off, there should be some info to be gained by looking at the movement, under magnification there should be maker's marks. I would go back and look for the rest of it.

Pocket watches are always a neat item to dig up, as far as it being a conductors pocket watch it would be hard to say, though most had brass movements as the pocket watch was an important piece of equipment that lives depended on it 100%.

What villagenut said. Clean it up a bit and look for a serial number or a maker. Looking at the pics you have posted, it should be on the opposite side. Such as this:

sry to say...not a conductors watch. A RR watch had to meet certain standards. It looks like, what they called a dollar watch. It's kind of a generic term used for a few different brands and models. It will take a few min. I'll see if I can figure out which one.

Smiths Pocket Watch Identification

I tried to just use the pics. You will have to scroll down the page. I think that is it. They made different styles, I think it's the same company. Even though the one in the pic looks, and says Railroad. It wasn't. The Railroads did not approve these for use.

I love finding pocket watches, in any condition.
Shine that brass up, with all that fused rust, it can look killer.
