It's rough but qualifies for my admittance into the 1700s club.

I found this little gem Sunday 11-16-14, hunting a heavily iron infested farm house built in 1831. I have pounded this site pretty hard and any clean targets are gone. I have found 5 LCs, 3 Indians, only 6-8 wheaties. Every time I'm there all I can imagine is finding my first capped or seated silver. Before Sunday my only silver from here is 2 war nickels and a merc. Hunting the E-trac in TTF moving very slow I hit the choppy 39/40 signal, expecting at most a wheaty. It took 2 days before another detecting buddy identified it for me, boy was I surprised after finally realizing, I had found 1700s Silver!! This 1/2 Reale is worn out and used up, but it is however:

My first 1700s coin
My Oldest found coin
My Oldest Silver coin
My first 1/2 Real
1. One of the pillars with banner. 2. M with o (mint mark) 3. Letters "IND" 4. H I of HISPAN, this is what Olentangy recognized in order to identify this for me.
PS: Still looking for my first Seated and Capped Silver
Thanks for looking, Bill

congrats on the half real! It may be beat up, but it's a scarce find. They tend to be a bit more common than capped bust silver. I have 5 spanish silver, and only 3 capped bust.

Well, I don't have a capped bust or any reales so finding that would have been a hug thrill for me. Congratulations.

Congrats on the 1700's silver, I have found a few 1700's coppers but never a 1700's or even 1800's silver. Good luck on getting in the 1600's club, so far I have found two 1600's coins, an 1696 Britannia Halfpenny, and a 1655-1658 French Liard. Spanish silver is not an easy thing to find, congrats!

What a fantastic find, congrats on joining the 1700's club. When I see a worn coin like your half real, I always wonder how long it must have remained in circulation. I'll bet your coin was lost between 1831 (when the house was built) and 1857 (the year Spanish silver no longer legal tender). No doubt a lot of people handled it in the 50+ years it was circulated!

In my parts, the only chance I would have for finding something like that would be the southern or eastern part of the state where everything is a bit older.

That beauty isn't rough it's just lived an interesting life and it's got the scars to show(kinda like me lol). It's a great find and there's nothing wrong with a little character
