Oh Man That's Not A Merc... Seated Surprise!

Went out this morning to get a hunt in at a place I've been having good luck with on silver. It's an old school that was built in the 30's, so my finds haven't been older than that. I have gone over the place really well but was trying to go over areas I haven't been. It was slow going and after two hours I was ready to go when I decide to hit a spot close to the road. Lots of trash like deep cans. I had got a good signal that turned out to be junk, a few feet over I got another great signal and dug out a nice silver dime. I have found about a dozen Mercs from here and was hoping for another one. As I looked at it closely, I spotted the arm of Lady Liberty! After taking some pics I carefully rinsed it off with water to reveal this beautiful 1890 Seated Dime! What a great surprise and what a way to end a slow hunt! HH Dave

WOW!! Pleasant surprise. I'm 4 years into this hobby and still waiting for my first Seated! I have hunted probably over 125-150 1800s era farm houses and found lots of Indians, 12-14 largies and only 1 1800s Silver, it was a 1898o barber Quarter. I just can't make sense of all the 1800s coins I have found at these sites and still no Seated Silvers. My one saving grace, which I still find hard to believe is the 1778 Spanish 1/2 Reale I did find (about 3 weeks ago) at a home site built in 1831. Persistence pays off and you earned it today! Big Congrats.

Thanks! Congrats on that Half Real! The 1700's club is hard to get into. It seems any 1800's silver is tough to come by but Seated's are elusive for me as well. I started out the same as you and had dug a 1777 One Real before any Seated coins. I have dug two half dimes and two dimes since, in about 2 years. It will be the same for you. Just keep at it on those old sites and you will dig one soon. Good Luck to ya!

I would think that was a very nice surprise. I guess I have a couple years to go before I find 1 then. Congrats.

Same here. I made the 1700's Silver club, but still haven't found my first silver from the 1800's. Found a cut quarter of a 8 Reales earlier this year with 3 digits of the date, 797. Really hoping to find a 1800's silver before the year ends!

Man, that's fantastic and in nice shape too. My only seated is an 1877 that looks like somebody sanded it down, then put it in acid. Felt way thinner than a dime when I pulled it out of the dirt and so light that I thought it was an aluminum disc of some sort. Only when the light is at the right angle can you make out whutitizz. Congrats on a great find!
