Hi
Just got back home from a 3 hour hunt on pasture field. I found the coin as I was due to leave the field. It was 4 inches deep. I checked Internet and think it is a 1 reale and could be Peru or Bolivia. It has 702 at the base of coin so presume it is 1702. It is 2 gram and probably was clipped. I would appreciate any input / feedback re coin as I am no expert and its something I never normally find. How it got into a field in North West England is anyone's guess.
Thanks for looking. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1438520638.013937.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1438520660.894044.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1438520679.459947.jpg

Nice cob. That's a cool find anywhere, but an especially cool find for northern England. Cheers!

Nice! Probably same reason some Roman coins are found here. People have been collecting coins for a long time. And then there's Show & Tell :laughing7:

Not clipped, just the normal crude shape.

That's one of my wish list items, if only I could get that on grass!

Great Find!

Yes, its weight indicates it is a 1R coin-though very under weight. A 'full' 1R would weigh about 3.4 grams; a 1/2R= 1.7 grams. It's too heavy for a 1/2R and under the 1R weight--so it's a 1R. It has been clipped (the straight edge)-- maybe more than once--to get it so light. Additional clipping post mint plus excessive wear and, perhaps, the elements, have produced your coin.

Re Don's assessment of the clipping, I was going to post that it appears to be an extremely rough shape for such a late cob. Milled coins were not too far in the future by the time this one was minted. The rough shape and weight would support the fact that it was indeed clipped as Don said probably more than once.
