Just discovered this piece from an area that used to be a fort from the 1700's occupied by the Danish. Any ideas on what it could be? MUCH APPRECIATED!!! (this was after it was cleaned obviously)
It really does doesn't it!!! Because those sides look like that was where it was drilled into the door!!! Maybe thats it!! Would still love to hear more ideas!
I think Red James Cash has it right--it appears to be a door knocker striker plate. Here's a modern reproduction I found online without the mounting wings that yours has. Yours appears to be Victorian and probably has nothing to do with the 18th C or the Danish fort. Country and general area it was found in might be of some help in providing a better ID.
I'm sure you are right as it does resemble a rosette, but most rosettes I have seen have a square loop on the back for a strap to pass thru. Do you mean a bridal boss? I'm not exactly sure where or what a bridal boss did. I know the rosettes were typically on the sides of the horses heads.
