I little stop at the mill site again.
I found this beautiful post office button, I was able to save alot of the gild. It will display nice. Its funny last week I found a Wanamakers badge there from John wanamakers, and the time this button was made he was the post office General. Go figure.
Also if anyone has any info on the button with the torch on it please chime in.
Also found this cool little face with some bling around it. Have no clue what it is. And some silver and a OD nick. Lol
Thanks for looking
George

That button is very cool, and still has lots of gilt. Congrats on all the sweet finds!

Great finds Vino. Might be into something with Wanamaker. Maybe items related to the scandal he was involved in trying to get PO uniform contract for a company that he had ownership in while he was Postmaster General.

He also had government contracts during the Cilvil War

Nice little hunt there George. Love that PO button - never dug one of those but I have found a couple of PO badges. That item with the torch and 2 flags looks like it might be a collar disk of some sort. Doesn't it have a stud on the back instead of a shank? And that face thing reminds me one of those theatrical masks, or maybe it's the devil.

Thanks Bill, yes its a collar disc. Sorry said button. And it definitely looks like the drama face.
Thanks for the Email, that article was great. Shame it was in black and white. The pics would have been so much better in color.
Hope to get in to older sites soon.

Here's an identical button found in CA. Some good info posted as usual on this thread from Mackaydon. Horstmann Brothers operated 1859 to 1893 in New York and Philly* See links in Don's post for more info.

Great button! Did you clean it with Aluminum Jelly? If not, try it on the button--it works wonders.

Thanks Erik, yes iam very familiar with Horsman. I even detected his summer home in my area. Lol
The button I put in hot peroxide for a few minutes, the I brushed it with white distilled vinegar a few times.
Then you rinse it with cold water.
Anymore then the gild would come off!

I have had great success with aluminum jelly, but will try your method too. Thanks.

I forgot to include the link in my prior post -- I just added it. I hope it provides some more information

I have never had it damage a thing. It works great on silver plated spoons too. I mean if the gilt is starting to flake off I would not use it. But you brush it on for a few minutes and rinse off with cold water. Breaks down the stuck on dirt/crud very quickly. Buckleboy has a cleaning thread on buttons with spectacular results -- this is where I learned about it. Just need to exercise common sense when using it. And please don't confuse it with Naval Jelly which is a different animal.

Your P.O.D button has very solid gilt remaining and so it will not do anything but make the gold shine beautifully. Here's a similar button I did recently and this one came out of the ground horrible.

That P.O.D button is a rad one Georgie! Probably one of the cooler buttons I've seen. Your slowly creeping back in time . Can't wait to see what magic you pull outta there next.
