Great find , I wonder what would have happened if IP didn't chime in? It would have probably passed everyone else up. Then I wonder how manny other cool finds have slipped by us?

What I wonder is how much is missed by the people who do not post finds, or share them with many others.

In this case I can say there is definitely one more besides me who would have caught it for what it is... but there's also many on here who have dug George I coppers and are very familiar with them, so I'm pretty sure the conversation would have started regardless of whether I posted or not.

Believe me, not many finds slip by on the forum.......I have seen many KGI Halfpence posted over the years and I have found quite a few, but never seen any that I thought were counterfeit until now. That is a rare find. That coins deserves special recognition.

Very true. I noticed the difference as I looked at the date when first ID'ing the coin vs. pictures on the Internet but I chalked it up to just a different variety. Lesson learned...thanks to IP.

I've been looking at these things from both detecting forums and for sale for a decade, and this is the first that jumps out as clearly a struck counterfeit. I have seen some nice cast ones which also really stood out and were obvious counterfeits... but not the wow factor like this one. People might think that's an odd term for this, "wow factor," but anyone who has seen the George I coppers hundreds or thousands of times gets it.

Now that is a fantastic find.
This is what makes this hobby so special, we find things that have not been seen. That was a great catch IP.
Here is one that came of my site a few months ago.
It's a real one, and you can see the difference.
My vote is going in.
Banner, I hope people will see how rare this is.
Ps, cant believe it held up so well.

That's certainly an exceptional coin in a condition not typically seen with dug coppers. Hopefully the number of views and replies will draw further attention to this coin. Can you edit the title of a thread? If so, I would update the title, as this find represents so much more than your average run of the mill (or mint) King George copper. My banner vote is in. IP - you get my vote for beautiful human being after recognizing a diamond in the rough.

As I.P. has researched the coin and has related what it is, and how rare and valuable it is, I think this is a Banner Find for the historical value alone. It is certainly a cool piece. I'll bet this was a not only a fun experience to "find" the coin , but a pleasant shock to "find out" what exactly he had.

That might not just be the first of that type for you, as it might be the first type in general... as it's a struck counterfeit and a pretty rare coin! What is the size in mm? Believe it or not this may be in the range of a banner find, but will have to get an opinion of an advanced collector how few of these turn up. It's a pretty cool find.

Was my immediate thought as well, never seen a Geo I Counterfeit, very cool, & in great condition!

You've never seen a struck counterfeit.... cast George I are common, they just go unnoticed because there is nothing special about them.

Sorry, thats what I mean, a struck, rather than cast. The metal looks good & the date is a bonus. (I remember the odd cast one on here)

Again ... Awsome find. Congrats on this super coin.

Just for some general information for those who give two hoots...
The Mint report of 1787 states "only 8% of copper coinage in circulation had some tolerable resemblance to the king's coin".

I might also point out that most of the counterfeits in the colonies became accepted currency in America.
