We returned to the Roman Lion Field on the 01st Jan to start our second grid over this site from the opposite direct. We did 3 hours 15 minutes & got 23 Roman Coins & I got a hammered!
Today we did 3 hours 45 minutes & I ended with a Roman Silver & 11 Roman Coins, Cru'Dad completely blanked, so shows what the Deus can do against the Cortes.:thumbsup:
This is about the best start we could hope for, 7 hour hunt with;

34 Roman Bronze Coins (4 Album, including 1 silver washed)8-)
Roman Miniature Votive Axe - Rare find but in poor condition8-)
Hammered Farthing of Ed II?8-)
Sept Sev Denarius circa AD200 - A silver version of the horse rider is an unusual reverse type for us, Galba was the only other 1 (last year) - Most of our horse riders are bronze.:icon_thumright:

Great results! Liking the silvers and bronzes as the 4 are in crisp detail. The little Votive Axe is a different one, too bad it hadn't stood the test of time. What with your soils that the bronzes stand up so well compared to say Essex where most of them seem to be burnt to a crisp, and any that have detail don't come close to your recoveries?

It varies so much, but we do have sandy soil at this end of the field, so that helps a little. Then it's metal content & luck. Shaun7 is an Essex lad, had a few Roman Coins down his way, but never found a site, so not enough to make a judgement. Because its mostly a numbers game.

Wow those are great finds Cru. I very much appreciate your posts as it always gives me history topics to read further into, and all the amazing finds across the pond we will never find over here. Cheers

These tiny farthings (& smaller, I get lead the size of a matchstick head) used to be undetectable to the old generation detectors. More are now being found, specially with XP's focus on small silver like sceats in beds of nails.

So you can see why we missed it on the first grid, Cru'dad would have only had a slim chance of hearing it, & if I went too high/bad swing, so would I.

Great start! Album coins are always welcome! Like the axe too. these little votive miniatures are rare.
Please tell me someday about the setting you use. I'll hear that tiny coins but still have to swing real slow.

No secret, it's;

Disc 1
Sens 95
Freq 11.6 (12)
Iron Vol 03
Reactivity 02
Audio Resp. 05
Notch 00-00

My custom settings. Might not be the best, but its works for me.
