The mystery black piece would drive me nuts...I love a good mystery and if I had found it I would pull it out all the time, take a good long look at it and ponder...hopefully someone recognizes the design and can offer a explanation why the metal is black. It doesn't look too melted to me...

You're absolutely correct it's driving me nuts! I've stared at it more times and in more ways than I care to admit
It got even worse when I went back for the second hunt and found another one The second one is a bit more convincing of course..and still indescript enough for my level of experience to decipher..

Will post pics from that hunt this evening if I get the chance.

Pewter buttons can deteriorate quickly once they are out of the soil they need to be sealed this is one method to do so
