Dug this today at 3pm today in a farm field of an old home on an 1874 map.

Gonna soak it in olive oil for a few days and hopefully it will clean up nice. Don't want to scratch this one as its a key date and its in beautiful shape

Easily the most valuable coin I've dug in 12 years of detecting.

Only 2" deep. Gotta love those farm fields. I found another one as well...looks awful compared to this one. Lucky the ground and farm equipment was good to this one.

Congrats. Found about 150 IHPs in the past year. None with a date of 1872 that I can see:occasion14:

What is wrong with just hitting it with a toothpick? Sweet coin there. Do you wash the olive oil off then with hot soapy water?

I understand the olive oil helps loosen corroded crud but that looks so nice the way it is... Water and a toothbrush is enough, eh?

Very nice. Just want to learn is all...

If I put a toothbrush on it...it'll scratch the coin. I'll take my chances and go the safe route on this one.

Awesome key date IHP. I found one as well a couple years back in similar condition, also in a farm field. Sometimes you get lucky with condition. I've been in fields where the condition of the finds runs the whole spectrum from toast to darn near mint. Sweet that the good condition one was also the key date one. Congrats!

Just a beautiful example of early Indian head pennies. Show us it after the soak.

I've not seen any IH look that good out of the ground! Man, that thing is really going to clean up nice. I'm with you. Be patient and you won't have any regrets.
