Had the afternoon on my harvested potato field today. Managed to find an Edward 1st silver penny, from the London mint. Then a first for me .-. An Iron Age Awl . its 67mm long, and weighs 7.7 grams .. with one round section pointed end the other end is square sectioned and pointed as well. there is a groove around the body where it changes from round to square section and its very sharp still.. not too sure what they were used for.... Hutch.

Congrats on some really nice finds! The Awl was likely used to punch holes in leather, clothing made from animal hides, wood and possibly even soft metals.

Very nice hammered, not bent broke or cut, well centered, and great detail too.

I was going to suggest the same thing about the awl.
Leather ties were cut from thick flat skins. They appeared almost square once cut. That is what I think the square part of the awl would be for.
Congrats on the silver penny.

Had a few, round one end, square the other. But they are difficult to date, didn't change much from the late Bronze Age through to the Roman.
I would date this one to the Roman period, because of its finer finish, little rim.
A good find & the penny is in better than average condition!
