I had my best day ever yesterday- 3 silver cobs! They look like two clipped 1/2 reales (they weigh 1.3 g and 1.0 g., respectively) and a 1/4 real (weight .7 g). One of the 1/2 reales is in great shape, another in ok shape, and the 1/4 real is rough shape. If anyone can identify the origin and date any of the coins, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for passing along that line, Don. Excellent resource. Cobs are so cool- each one so unique and mysterious.

I was staring (literally) at the 1/2 reale with the cross and monogram yesterday and I noticed that there appears to be an "N" in the top right corner on the cross side. I know that the letters for the Bogota mint during this time were "NR" or "RN". I wonder if this "N" I see is part of the Bogota mint mark?

Staring at the monogram, I noticed what may be an "A" to the left of the "P" which is in the area of the assayer's initial. But these eyes continue to play tricks on me; seeing what may not exist.

The way I read the monogram without any cob knowledge is P VI S

perdido,
You may wish to rotate the castle and lions 180 degrees to get the lions standing on their feet.
Interesting how the images seems to have slight variations in the monogram pics (especially where the assayer's initial would appear--to the left of the "P".

So much potential down south of the border. When I go home to the Chicago area, I'm thrilled when I find a coin from the 1940s. Metal detecting is just taking off down here and I urge those of you with an adventurous streak, to come visit down here. :occasion14:

I'll bite, I'm adventurous, down where?
By the way, very cool finds.

Almost all Latin American countries have an abundance of history just waiting to be discovered. Stay away from the Native American stuff as there are strict laws against digging it up. But for random Spanish American coins and relics there is a lot to find. Try to hook up with an expat down in these countries and come visit on vacation. I'm always looking to go out with experienced metal detectorists for the comradery and to learn from those with more experience. I'm mostly a land hunter but have a salt water detector with which I have had little success.

The Lions should be 'rampant', so another qrter turn to the right.

Another possibility might be a 'Z' or '2'?
