UPDATE--WOW!! BUCKLE BEAUTY...1683 Mass Property

Hi gang,

We found our most complete and pretty buckle yet. It cleaned up nicely! I'm having some difficulty dating it. I have attached a bunch of photos. Also found this cool little thimble. We're off to check out your "today's finds." Thanks for looking. -Lisa & John

UPDATE--Guys, John pulled out that huge shoe buckle frame he found a few weeks back, and would you believe that the shoe buckle innards fit exactly into it?! Check out the new photos. Even the brass looks and feels the same. Coincidence? Found them about 100 feet apart. Hey, even if it is a coincidence, it's so cool. Thanks for looking. -L&J

Shoot, I changed the thread title to "Update," but it isn't showing up! Now none of our friends will be able to see our discovery!

Lisa, Great guts!

But they don't go with that gargantuan buckle! Lol.

Very classic design, here's a page from "Buckles: 1250-1800" By Ross Whitehead

I've personally never found a complete gut blowout like yours. Perhaps the pin snapped?

Cheers

Hello Lisa and John,

I believe the outer buckle and the inner "guts" are from different buckles.

Regards,

Doc

Thanks, Dig. Unfortunately, the innards and frame don't belong together! But they are both in great shape for sure. -L&J

Lisa/John,

Great news that both the guts and frame that you found in the same area fit together.....I'm far from an authority of the colonial shoe buckles but if you look at my link the outer frames go from dainty/flimsy looking to rugged/heavy frame types like yours.

If this was for everyday use in farm fields you'd definitely want something with a good solid frame which wouldn't fall apart easily under those conditions.

This wouldn't for your Sunday go to church meetings outfits in my humble opinion....:laughing7::laughing7:

Here's the link of various buckles from that era for those who wish to check it out.

Bill, that makes perfect sense. At one time, the property operated as a stagecoach Tavern, and there was a blacksmith and farrier on the premises and a 50-stall barn. At one time, there was also a school on the property. So there have been a lot of laborers who would need sturdy buckles. Would have been nice if these two pieces fit together. Thanks so much for the helpful link! Take care, Lisa

Nice buckle. This style, the weight, the curve, and lack of decoration 3rd quarter 18th century, mean age 1770.
