Went back to the Old trusty half-dime field today after cutting up some Oak for firewood.
Decided to get 2 birds with one stone. Some fire wood and metal detecting at one of my permissions.
I havent found much at this site in a while, but being persistent and digging everything paid off today.
Dug a little pottery, lots of melted lead, some rusty blobs, and some tiny brass today.
The big surprise was the half dime. #4 for me, and #7 from this site. It was a faint tone on the XP, in an area i was digging lots of melted pieces of lead.
I say semi key date, because there was only 140,000 minted at the Orleans mint that year. VF-20 puts it at $220. I think mine could possibly have VF details.
First one to come out completely black from this site. I think its due to it being dug in a low area of the field, near a tree line, that usually stays damp.
Shade, and easy diggin. Got kinda warm today for jeans and a t-shirt.
I also dug a folded over triangle which looks like a kettle point. Not that familiar with these, but ive dug quite a few folded over brass triangles from this site.
After reading in the Fur Trade section, i cant help but to wonder if the item pictured in the palm of my hand is a brass kettle point.
The land owner told me his father in law used to find arrow heads near this field a long time ago.
I recently searched the land deeds on this site, and one of the 2 names on the deed was WAK I O NAH.
On the actual deed it refers to a Choctaw Certificate, so i believe that the land was indian land at one time.

It's a tough call on that point. But that New Orleans seated silver is the bees-knees!

Excellent half dime find. I am envious. Looking closely at the photos (again, I emhasize "photos"), I'm thinking a grade of Fine, Environmental Damage.

Thanks Scrappy.
I figured it would be a hard call on the point, but i had to ask. I have dug several similar to this at this site.
I dont find many seated coins, and i get extra excited seeing the O mint mark. 90 minute drive to NOLA from here.

Thanks AJ. After zooming in and looking at the pics more, you are prob right. Wishful thinking, i suppose.

That's a very pretty coin! I'm guessing that it was hard to hear given all the scrap in the area. Well done!
