Had a hunt in the low country of SC at a plantation today. Found several other items including pewter buttons from the 1700s up to a civil war William Cleaner bullet. The photo will show the find of the day in my opinion but I don't know much about rosettes. It appears to be of very high quality and made of thin brass. It may have been stamped as the imprint of the lady and birds have a raised profile on the front and indentations on the back. There are possible marks on the back where the clip would have attached but not 100% sure. I couldn't get over the beauty of this thing and it is the most ornate piece of brass I have found to date. Seems to me like it would be identifiable due to the quality but not sure. Thanks for any input you all may have and I appreciate any comments.

That's a beautiful piece , I would think it might be mid to later 19th century based on the style - just guessing though. Very Nice !

Thanks for the replies, as they may have sparked a light bulb in my head about the site I am hunting. There is a large row of live oaks leading to the older home site from the mid 1700s but we hunted the area where a more modern house and horse pasture is located. Seems I may be able to locate a few civil war relics in this new spot. I found a musket ball with a hole straight through the middle. I will rename the post if I can do that, since I know it isn't colonial now, and post some fresh pics of the other items found.

Sweet find,, hope you get a matching and positive I.D.
AARC does seem to present a convincing example.
Congratulations

I agree, needs some research, I'm not convinced its horse related, AARC maybe on the right track. It is give or take 1900ish.

The construction is very similar to the insert of an early 1900s German military buckle I have dug... so I would also throw out the idea of part of a Victorian era (or just after) belt buckle.

Not a bad idea, Ladies Sash Buckle insert?

The feathers in that ladies hat were not popular until later in the 1800s, correct? The birds around the rim are swallows, they help sailors make it back to port (from what I know anyway).

Does not look like it has been in the dirt that long. Very nice find sir. Congrats.

Update...

I looked for a fair amount of time to find this in a locket / compact form to no avail...
With that said...
I still think this is Art Nuevo Era related... but yet ? ? ?

One question... With magnification... can you look closely and thoroughly to see if there was any sign of a presence of a hinge... or some other attachment marks ?

Sometimes it is not obvious at all... and even more sometimes almost impossible to tell without serious looking at it in detail.

So... if possible inspect it thoroughly as to perhaps rule in / out the "compact / locket" theory / guess. heh
