Hi guys! I haven't posted in some time but I wanted to share some recent discoveries.
Just so happens my boss bought a house, and on the property there is a foundation that was once a home built in the 1780s that doubled as the county's first court house starting in 1791, burned in the early 1900s. The modern house is set back a ways from the foundation so everything around the home site (for the most part) is old. What's strange (and fantastic) is that most of this stuff was only a few inches deep. Some of the buttons I just kicked the dirt/leaves and they popped right out.
I've made 3 trips there over the past few days and came away with some nice finds.
First, I found more buttons here than I have at any other site. They were popping out left and right - 19 in total. And most of them were huge flat buttons - not many of the 1800s "treble gilt etc etc" type I'm used to finding. I think the soil here is pretty acidic as you can probably see as basically everything I found is toasted. I can make out some flowery designs on a few of the buttons, but not much. One that has me really excited is the 1800s artillery button. I
Coin-wise, I did fairly well with the exception of almost all of them being in terrible shape. Two large coppers that are completely worn. One (pictured by itself) I'm fairly sure is a Vermont State copper...right after I took it out of the ground I could see a right-facing bust and pretty sure the "MON" of "VERMONT" in the upper left. As it dried, the details got worse. The holed copper I believe is some kind of KG, no idea on the reddish-colored one. Also pictured is the back of an 1847 Large Cent that the owner wanted to keep, and a 19?? V Nickle. Not pictured are 1888 and 1905 Indian Heads that his kids helped me find, and kept. No doubt the prize of these hunts is a holed 1783 half reale. It was a relief finding a silver on which I could actually see a date.
Relics - got a few buckles and pieces, (pretty sure the rectangular one is a shoe buckle frame, a thimble, some silver jewelry, and some unidentified thingy.
Overall it was great to get out after a long hiatus, especially at a place like this. No doubt I will be back again soon...
