I got out to my buddy's site that has produced over 30 military buttons this season and scored a couple of keepers. The Lafayette button was made around 1824 to celebrate the Revolutionary War hero's visit to America. I was was thrilled to find it from Calabash Digger's pounded site! The .58 cal Gardner bullet dates from the Civil War.
Thanks for looking! GL2.jpg lafback3.jpg 1piece eaglegroup.jpg

Yeah, real nice Finds!
I was unable to read the back mark entirely.
"EXTRA" on the bottom, but what's on the rest of the back...?

That's a nice Historic button Keith. He came through Southwestern PA on that trip. Maybe I'll dig one of those someday :icon_thumright:
By the way, it's also a good example of the type of back marking in use around 1824. I am amazed when I see people calling buttons with similar back marks as 18th century.

They must be scarce if you haven't dug one Steve:laughing9:. I think you have a great chance of finding one before you hang up your detector.
I still remember the GW image cufflink you have found and posted!:occasion14: HH----Keith

Calabash Digger has pounded that site taking everyone and his brother there over the last year. I could not even get a buckshot of that place now. He wants to rent a Bobcat and finish whipping it now. Nice finds youre making!
