...20 years later. Finally found one.

I have been searching the dirt for two decades and have never found one...Until today. A maple-syrup tree tap. "PAT'D 1884". The end.

Great find! Is that by chance made of steel? The newer ones that I use of metal are all cast aluminum. Interesting hole placement on the end toward the tree, or may be imagination..

Oak, beech and maple...it was in the deep part of the woods making me wonder if there was an old homestead nearby

Yep...made of steel. I actually was not going to dig it up but it was so far from civilization that I just had to see what was out there.

We definitely have a lot of maple trees but not certain as to what types (as an avid outdoorsman I really should learn that).
Oh...please send a pint of syrup to everyone on this post and we will confirm your talents
