Our plan was to try a long-shot field that was next to a Roman Site but had produced nothing. It was also a ankle breaker. Whilst we were in the area we thought we would check the Roman Mansio Site, not really expecting any change! As it happens it had a 6-7inch turn & although pretty choppy it was workable. I only had a short solo detecting window & managed the below in just 2.5 hours;

Roman Roof Tile - Finger Prints (Got me going for a dog print for a second!)
Evidence of under floor heating (Box Tile bits)
Roman Tessera
Roman Animal Bones & Teeth
A small selection of small Roman Nails (Been clearing more & more of these as time goes on)
4 Scrappies
1 Roman Partifact?
Laying on the top - Roman Siliqua of Julian II AD357-60. One I need of him as Caesar.

2 Outings 2 Roman Silvers:headbang:

Very nice Roman silver, liking the die crack. Do you clean up the nails at all, or leave as is.

As always, sweet hunt Cru. Killer Roman silver... but I have to say, finger prints on that tile are over the top awesome. I think something like that would be one of my all time favorite finds. It makes something utilitarian, in to one of the most personal finds I could think of. It's ancient and the fingerprints bring it back to life. :occasion14: ... It's amazing to me at least... others might just see it as a broken roof tile :laughing7:

I remember that dog print tile a year or so ago. Also incredible.

Looking forward to the next hunt man.

All good stuff, love the siliqua, but I agree the fingerprints in the tile are really a special find. So awesome!

I have one with fingerprints on the side. They came most likely from lifting up during produktion but these here are special because they look like a signature. Like an "i was here!" And they are small. Probably a kid working in the manufacture. Lots of history behind such a personal find.

Its a plough damage crack, lucky I pucked it off the top before the rollers came out.

Cru, do you ever get skunked on a hunt? I mean are there times when you go out and just find beer can tabs and a modern penny like the rest of us? Awesome finds as always. Thanks for sharing.

When I first joined, I made it clear I would post every hunt. (Although due to circumstances I sometimes combine a couple of days) This was so you could see the whole picture & not just the highlights. So, unless you can remember me post nothing, then skunking is a long lost distant memory for me. But that takes years to get to this point.

So the short answer is - 'not really'.

More fascinating history here. As much as I favorite coins that roof tile with the hand print is absolutely cool. Preserved for centuries and recovered with great care. Priceless.:icon_thumright:

Thanks looking at them again, I'm pretty sure Westfront is right & this is an indication of Child Labour.
