I was invited today to detect on an excavation of a roman vicus site. With just the top soil removed conditions were better than the last times i was out with them. Slow learning.... :laughing7:

With low disc nails were detected too and recorded.

Next coin was another AS, rare find in this condition. No wonder coming of a long time pasture field.

Looks like lots of fun to me. They are lucky to have you, I've not had to hand over a Roman Silver yet..... Keep at it.

That was a fun day for sure! Sun burned my neck some more... Too bad only small parts of the site will be excavated. It's huge with archaology all over the place. Now only the areas are examined where later on a cowshed and silo will be build.

Helping the archies out is a dream I one day hope to fulfill. Guess they dont need a 10+ years experienced detectorist...
Good going!

It took several years to build up trust for both parties and now i get telephone calls to help out when finds are sparse.... They know just grabbing a beep machine doesn't cut it. You have more experience like they have, thats what matters here.

Nice outing Lu. Do you think you find more after it's uncovered than if you searched it before? Can't tell how deep you start on your pics. Do you get to keep the coins and any idea on the "bronze thingy"? Sorry about the neck.

Hi Tim, top soil was removed and detecting started at about 1 1/2 feet deep. There was some landfill in the area too and finds started deep down.
No way to keep any of the finds. After inspection by the experts we may know what the bronze thing is. :dontknow:

Went back today for some final detecting after the archies called it a day. They got a small hoarde of damaged fibulae deeper in the ground which i missed. Today i found two more and a hairpin. Interesting was a decorated 18thC button between the roman stuff. Lots of movement in the ground there.

A hoarde of fibulae? What could the purpose of that have been? I once read that fibulas were sometimes used as payment method, is that correct? If yes, this fibula-hoard might have been a type of currency-saving?
I guess they would re-use the bronze for other craftings instead of throwing the damaged fibulas away?

Might indicate metal working.

The quantity of fibula will surely cause some head scratching. Previous to today were there a lot found, or was this likely a isolated pile?
