I've been chasing dots on the 1876 atlas maps in my town. Decided to try one dot this morning, school field woods, looked like easy access. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063003.150231.jpg
When I got there the field weeds were really high except for a thin path at the edge of the woods. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063104.689929.jpg

First signal was in the zincoln range and out popped what I thought was a thin flat button without a shaft, quickly put in my keeper pocket. When I got to better light in the parking lot it looked like an IHP, but a little thin and small, did a little clean up and saw III on the obverse side, knew it would be something good.

Then the best signal of the morning, nice and high, tight and not too strong. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063394.399323.jpg Knew this had a good chance of being a Large Cent when I picked it up!

The flat button turned out to be a 3 Cent Nickel, bucket lister for me. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063532.576384.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063544.260494.jpg

The Large Cent is a 1844 Braided Hair Liberty, only my second LC! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063798.351971.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063808.489374.jpg
There seems to be a lot of detail on this LC, any advice on how to make her more presentable? Not looking to ever sell her.

Here is everything from the last couple mornings at old farm homesteads. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505063906.643615.jpg

Good luck out there!!

Congratulations on a great hunt! Those round coppers with the holes punched are widow makers. Lol

Sweet coins. Both 3 cents are still on my list. My advice on the LC is leave it as is. Youll find one in better condition some day that you will enjoy as a display piece. That one has character and sometimes thats better than whatever the end result will be from trying to clean it.

Thanks HighVDI! Those round copper tags are in all the old dirt I hunt. They definitely sound sweet. I like them when they have the farm or mine name and or a dated one best.

I wasn't sure what exactly I had so I dry brushed it with a toothbrush. It left a partial patina of shiny brown, but my finger nail easily chipped this off. Used some nose oil and rubbed with fingers and a slight nickel color is coming out. It looks more Nickel-like in the sun (the pics above are in the sun) otherwise it looks a pretty much like a penny in normal light ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505078406.003418.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505078420.620964.jpg
, but don't want to mess with this one as it has nice details. Thx!

If a silver 3¢ piece is called a trime, a nickel 3¢ piece should be called a trickel. Nice finds

Historicmapworks.com has the PA 1876 atlas online. Not sure about other states. The 1876 maps are accurate enough to walk into the woods and actually find artifacts if you do overlays or other techniques. Some of the earlier maps are definitely not as accurate. I'm always looking for new maps with home location "dots". Thx
