Marl, also known as green sand, was used for fertilizer many years ago. It was mined locally at an old chemical plant nearby. I metal detected here in town today in and along a stream running into the Rancocas Creek layered with marl. I managed to find a 1943P silver Jefferson war nickel, an old railroad spike, a carbon battery rod, probably to a battery operated railroad switch as the old railroad bed is nearby, and some other pieces of iron. The photo of the sunken barge is from a local paper in 1955.
