Got to Baltimore City this morning and detected for three hours. Pretty much went back to where I found the '39 merc on Tuesday and gridded the area more. First hit was a quarter on quarter spill and a couple other clad spills were found; this tells me this area hasn't been hit lately. Some deeper mid-tones yielded Jefferson nickels from the 40s and 50s but no further silver was uncovered, so I began a grid of an adjacent area for the remainder of my hunting time. Soon into this new spot I uncovered a silver necklace; it tests at 80% silver but has no hallmark or assay. Continuing on I got a mid to higher tone but numbers jumping and while excavating located the ball of soil holding the target. I could see it on end and due to its dark color I thought I may have a tombac button but it turned out to be coin not button. It is a one real of 1781; the obverse has been scraped and is worn but the date is evident as is the name of the Spanish King "Carolus III"; the mint location is worn off on the back but the assayer's initials "F. F." are clear. Pretty crazy hunt and it ended with some good conversation with a fellow detectorist "8Reales" with whom I was able to share intel of where the older finds are coming from here.

Later I will post a link to the video of this hunt.

Thanks TheMilDetector! I have to say that neither of those targets sounded like silver to me. Thanks for checking out the post. HH and GL!

Once again Congrats on your silvers Señor Mike, I stayed for about an hour and managed a war nickel and an old suspender buckle, but the spot is very promising and hope to go back soon.

Sweet finds on those two silver treasures. Really cool you ran across 8Reales. Between the two of you those old coins and relics don't stand a chance!:headbang:

Thx Scruggs! Was in a "silver" drought there for awhile but the tide has turned of late.

Thx Scrappy! Park was settled in late 1700s and the particular portion where this was found was farm field and orchard. I am finding evidence of a fire by virtue of the charcoal I'm finding.

Congrats on the Spanish Silver. That’s so awesome that you have access to a spot like that, my park just isn’t that way.

Best of luck to you.

Thx Art! Just renewed my permit last Friday. Baltimore City Rec and Parks fee for an annual permit is $25. I've broken the 1900 barrier with a number of coins from this particular park and, as in this case, it is possible to break the 1800 barrier. Soil is highly corrosive to copper. Even the IHCs found here are in rough shape.

Thx Tom! This was my fifth Spanish silver for the year; two have come from this particular park and the others from two different sites in Baltimore County. I was hunting with a friend two months ago and I suggested we detect a median strip area near where our vehicles were parked and he dug a half real from the 1790s; this was in West Baltimore. HH and GL!
