Good Morning T-Net'ers,

I had a chance to get out yesterday for a few hours of detecting. The woods were cold ( 20 degrees) and snow covered (1-2 inches), but I was determined to make a go of it. Three hours of hunting resulted in a couple of wheaties, a 1923 Merc, and an odd little chain, with a nautical theme. The clasp is stamped "wjl". Some initial research on the internet hasn't turned up much. The chain was about 4 inches down, and rang in with a 58 vdi on my AT Pro. The highlight of the day was spending some quality time with a couple of deer. The clock is running down on the 2017 season, and if the weather cooperates, I'm hoping to get out digging a couple more times. HH.

Interesting chain you got there Silvermonkey. :icon_thumleft: Hope you get an ID. That deer is obviously sticking his tongue out at the shotgun hunters that missed him. He shouldn't get too cocky though. It's still black powder season in MA. Maybe some hunters put some doe urine on that tree recently :icon_scratch:

Nice pictures of the Whitetail bucks and your chain appears to be a pocket watch fob. Just my 2 cents worth. Congrats.

My favorite byproduct of getting out detecting is the wildlife. I’ve seen so many neat things out there, but a deer licking a tree, I have not!

That's what I was thinking also when I saw it, and a great pice at that. Congrats on the recovery it's a sweet keeper to end out the season.
Great pics of the deer also.

Awesome pocket watch fob, Silvermonkey. Based on your VDI, it is probably German silver or some other alloy. Something that big in sterling would have blown your headphones off! It is a keeper for sure! Sub 8-)

I think those deer are trying to give you a message...? Did you detect around that tree when they left? At the very least I'd bet a couple of bucks or some doe were there.

Thanks everyone for the comments and the help in identifying the strange chain. I'm also thinking its a watch fob, but I'm no closer on being able to id the maker or the age. Oh well...still a fun, and different kind of fine for me. Hope everyone out there is able to end the year on a high note!

Great finds. I'd guess that's gotta be buck attractant sprayed on that tree but what do I know?
