The plate measures 83mm x 50mm and is plate 004 in Steve Mullinax's "Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates". After reading the description in the book I realized it does have a slight curve to it and look like a perfect match. This is a Virginia style, according to the book, and thousands were made for the Confederacy, he lists it as a rarity of "6", i.d., not super rare.

Truth123, they are still out there. I think the secret for finding "good stuff", no matter what you are looking for will depend on how well an individual can "think out of the box". Deeper in parks won't do it, A "better" machine probably won't do it, unless you're in high trash and nail pits. It's going to be the person that "accidentally" stumbles upon a lost picket post, a long forgotten house not on any map and even on known sites, the person who gets the goodies will dig under trees, around trees, in every briar patch, next to the roads, in the swamp, under the electric fence in the nail pits, among the aluminum cans (like today's find). All that stuff. This target acted like an aluminum can "screamer". It was not aluminum.

Now that is the way to start the new year. You won't be able to sleep tonight, so you might as well get your brushes and tooth picks out and do your thing. More pics after cleaning would be super nice. What a find !!!

Awesome find. Donít discount your efforts that anybody could find it. The FACT of the matter is that it was you dear Smokey that found it and nobody else before you did.

    So happy for you!

Digging up relics one day at a time. Always looking for fellow detectorist to go out with and enjoy this hobby. Been swinging a coil going on 24 years now this year and loving every minute of it.

Everyone is just one swing away from finding that one target to change your whole life

Also I want to thank all my great friends on here for keeping me going through all these years. Couldn't do it without yall.

Visit my YouTube Channel: Relic Recovery Specialist. Will be adding new videos every day. Thanks for the support everyone.

Thank you all. In all honesty, we had only found two Confederate items on the site, a cast I button and a fired bullet. I did not find the bullet and can't remember which one it was. We had found two nice crotal bells in the last month and that's what I was looking for. I thought the site was done with CW relics. I suppose it's not. Now it's time to think out that box and see what's in the rock piles and in the briers and bushes.Click image for larger version.

ID:	1536272 This is the crotal bell from the same site. One more was found that was a lot bigger. Plus the silver ring (modern) and my first and second ever capped bust dimes and a nondescript Confederate iron buckle.
