Looks like it may be P.O.W. / M.I.A. bracelet.
They were worn in memory of veterans lost or captured during the Vietnam War

Thanks for all these great links. Very interested piece we found. My in laws have property in Ruckersville and found it while building his new garage. It was about a foot down in the ground.

I think this guy was in the war of 1812 if it's the same guy. All my research leads me to believe it is. As to what the piece actually is, I don't know. I local historian may be able to shed some light. Interesting piece of history for sure. I'd be out there detecting my in laws property for sure.

Something that large may have been a grave marker. Perhaps something wrapped around a stone or wooden post.

Have you checked the ownership records for the land where it was found? Perhaps a Jones family owned the land in the past. The county office should have those records.

If you think it may be a grave marker, you might want to see if there are any old church records available in your area. Churches usually recorded the deaths of their members.

Personalized cast iron was prohibitively expensive, unlike stove parts, etc. that were mass produced. I don't know that I have seen personalized cast iron grave markers before.
