It was a crisp 26 degrees in the woods today, so I only lasted about an hour. But I did manage one good find, an old ax head. It weighs 3 3/4 pounds and appears to be hand forged. Looks to be a New England pattern ax head (no surprise there).

Not in bad shape, but pretty rusty. I gave it 6 hours of electrolysis, which removed most of the rust. I coated it with mineral oil for the time being, since I'm probably going to give it another round of zapping in the future.

Any guesses as to how old it is? I'm thinking late 1800's, but I could be wrong. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for that post vpnavy, I was looking for that exact information to ID my axe head I found (barn) seems it’s a 19th century shipwrights Axe, whatever the hell that was used for, but great reference page anyway!!

Nice find Tim. Glad you got out. Supposed to be almost 50 degrees this weekend. Very tempting except I'm supposed to bring someone ice-fishing. I'd rather be dirt fishing!

Thanks guys! Hoping it will go above freezing today. Anything below that is tough on the fingers. Loved finding the ax head, but these heavy iron relics are a killer to carry 1/2 a mile through the woods! LOL!

Yeah it gets tough with heavy iron, I've torn two whites pouches and one Garrett pouch. I really need to Get one of freeloaders large pouches

I've found 9 ax heads and 3 hatchet heads over the past 5 years. But they're usually bent or broken, so it was nice to find one in good shape.
