You double checked the hole I assume? If you did, it's not THAT unusual to see coins have exaggerated TID's. Being the war nickels are a funky breed with the silver content not exact, it could be easy to see them go higher. If you add other conditions like the moisture and salt content, this can trow it off as well.

However, being that it is stained with rust, I would wager there was a large Iron object near and what you were experiencing was iron falsing(wrap around) and the low TID of the nickel mixed.

I bet the ones that ring up high for you are the "S" mint mark war nickels. Watch my videos. There is something with S mint mark ones. Either were mixed inconsistently or??

All of mine were dug in the dirt as well. I made the vids a couple years ago when folks were asking the same thing about war nickels ringing in way high. So far it has only been the s mint ones that I have seen do it.

You bet, i also tested them on the at pro, max and f75. Indeed not machine specific, They all rang in high and proptionate between with each machine..

I found one not too long ago that did the same thing. Thanks for the videos as I thought too that it was odd for such a high TID on a nickel.

I’ve dug a couple dozen over the years and funny enough, a few have rung up that high on my CTX. Even the CTX isn’t impervious to inaccurate ID’s.

The other possibility it’s a Henning counterfeit. Wrong year but it’s a good read.

It has nothing to do with the ctx, deus, at pro, at max or f75. It is the nickel

It is interesting to say the least. You get a tiny bit of variance in the non "S" mint marks. But nothing like the "S" mints. Kind of neat really..

That’s crazy to watch that video seeing how much they varied. And, yes this one is an S mint mark! First time I’ve ever had one ring up so high. Makes me want to check out other examples now.

haha, Yea they threw me for a loop when I found the first one. Now I have found 12 s mints and they most ring up very high. the D and P's just ring in slightly higher than a normal nickel.. Test your others if you get a chance, I am kind of taking a survey lol

That is awesome, this should tell if it is the ground changing the nickel or a mix issue when minted!!

I have had several of my dug war nickels ring up higher than normal but never thought to check to see if they were all the same mint. I'll have to look into that.
