I finally got my search coil over my first Seated Dime for the year. It's thin and worn out. They don't pop their heads up very often around here, so I'll take it. It was only about inch or so deep under a huge oak tree about 40 yards from the fairway at Overton Park. It gave an ID like a copper penny. I also found a coin spill of a 1928 and 2 1929 wheat pennies.

I'd call it sweet too! I've had several silvers that I thought were going to be a penny, even a zinc one and was totally surprised. more the reason to let the shovel be the discriminator. congrats on the finds. still looking for my 1st seated

Thanks! Yeah, it's a well use coin. I've detected this site a bunch of times and didn't find it or dig it for some reason.

Looks like a great day tabman! Congrats! No detecting here yet!
Thanks! I won't be long before things warm up.

I'd call it UGLY, but since I've never found one.....Sweeeeet.
Thanks! I've been on little dry spell so I was happy to unearth it.

Thanks! With it being that shallow and giving a ID of a copper penny, I'm lucky to have dug it.

tabman, You always impress me with your finds. You are a silver magnet.
Thanks! I get lucky sometimes and I have some good sites to detect. Risky but good!

Very nice! Congrats!
Thanks! I did some research on the net to see why people put holes in the coins and why were they square holes and not round holes. Here's what I found:

The 20th Century trappers/fisherman and outdoorsman were known to carry their money (coins) on strings as a result of a lack of pockets in their outer clothing.
Therefore by making holes in the soft silver metal of the 20th Century coinage they would be able to tie a string around their waist that would allow the coins to slide into the string and be carried this way.
This is why the vast majority of the coins you see on E-bay with hole punches are between the years 1858-1910.
If only those coins could speak!

Also the holes were made with a nail and back then nails were square. So who ever put the hole in it, did so a long time ago.

She may be ugly, but she's all yours and you can identify her as a Seated. Congrats on a nice find.

Actually, I think the hole made with an old square nail adds character to the coin. I can just see someone back in the day stringing it and hanging it around their waist or neck for safe keeping. A dime bought a lot back then.
