I had 2hrs to hunt before work this morning so decide to go back the street tear out I saw they moved more dirt and glad I did , got a 12-14/13 signal and dug it up and saw a nickle , I'm thinking a buffalo or V nickle but no it was a shield nickle WOW!!! I never thought I would find a shield nickle a dream list find!!
Any ideas how to clean it, I see 187???

Congratulations on your find. If you look at internet pictures of different shield nickel dates, the visible "8" on yours appears like it is to the right of the center, which would make it 188x. Among the possible values "0", "1", "2" and "3", the partially visible numeral to the right of that "8" looks most like a "2", making it an 1882.

Great 'details' left on that coin . To bad Nickles are not made of Gold . lol

Look as good or better than the only 1 V Nickle I have ever dug.

Congrats on the great find! Looks like an 1882 to my old eyes! Cleaning is hit or miss, so I defer, although I've seen many different techniques offered up. GL!

Wow, that's amazing! I haven't even thought to put that on my bucket list, should probably find a V first. Big time congrats!

Nickels around here in southern WI are pretty scorched if they’re old. I’ve found 4 shield nickels that are all very rough. Yours is one of the best ones out of the ground I’ve ever seen, you should be proud of that one! And good God!...go back before they finish that project!:walk:
