Hi everyone,

Am doing the happy dance today ;D First gold, first ZAR coinage, Best find.

Went to a old Boer war site with a friend, where the artillery were set up for battle in the Boer war.
It is a great site made up of walls about 1.5 metres high that the troops used to run around in. The whole structure is in a horseshoe shape.
Anyway, I got a signal and dug down and found this coin. As soon as I picked it up, I saw that it was gold because of the colour. Something I learnt from this site is to never rub a coin, so I waited till I got home and washed it in soapy water. (that was very difficult)

Gold Kruger 1 Pond, 0.2353 Ounces Gold, Value +- R2000

I found another bullet case and a small piece of pottery, and that was it......

I know for a fact that this site has been gone over by many others in the past, as this was told to me by another guy that did detecting. So right from the start I knew that if I found something, there would not be much.
But I have learnt from Tnet that a site is never stripped of it's finds.

Anyway, here are pics of the coin and the site, hope you enjoy them.

God bless
Peter

Thanx everyone. Does anybody know what a SA Pond (Pound) would buy in those days? or what was the soldiers salary in them days? I think this soldier lost a lot of money :'(

God bless
Peter

Between 1793 and 1919 the British soldier was paid a shilling a day, so a pound represented 20 days pay (before stoppages were taken out). They didn't get a payrise in 126 years when their pay went up from 1/- a day to 2/9 (2 shillings nine pence) in 1919.

Hi George,

I was using another chaps detector and the Tesoro.... I got the signal on the other chaps detector first but forgot to look at the meter (not used to a meter) then I used the Tesoro which picked up the coin very easily..... I find the Tesoro easy to pinpoint with, the other detector drove me mad trying. So I pinpointed with the Tesoro and dug the coin at 6" down. Only after I dug the coin did I check the meter on the other detector, and it showed gold ::) could of kicked myself.
Now I am looking for some way of adding a meter to the Tesoro without opening the detector.... when it works, dont open ;D Make one that can work by inductance or something, not sure though.

God bless
Peter
