Hello all treasure hunters. I usually post on the bottle forum but thought I would try this one on Today’s Finds.
Don, myself and my oldest daughter decided to head out to a house circa 1880s to see if we could find one more privy in the yard. Don and I have dug two in this yard already but the finds were less than stellar. Mostly bricks and newer 1920s whiskeys.
Since my daughter Ali is home from college break I asked her if she would like to go try and dig her first ever privy with her dear old Dad. She said let’s do it, what the heck. She has never helped me dig a privy and the last time she treasure hunted with us was when she was about 9 years old. She is a senior now in college. But she was excited to go see what we do on our time off. Of course she has seen the bottles and stuff we have dug but I don’t think she really could picture it without actually digging. So here we go.....
We got at the house and started probing, and probing, and probing. Ugh. Thought maybe there wasn’t another one in the yard. Nearly gave up but I decided to probe at an angle under the garage pad. Boom, I hit one finally. Felt a little newer with coal ash but we decided to give it a go.
Ali was eager to jump right on in with the digging. I like that kid. It took us a bit to remove the first 3 feet through some roots but we were closing in on the Use Layer. We decided to get to the top of the layer and let Ali in to experience her first bottle. Although I first came up with a broken Kennedy’s and some other shards she was chomping to get on that layer.
So here she goes. A first timer is always very cautious when digging around glass. In fear not to shatter anything. So it was slow going. But out pops her very first bottle. A small slick medicine from the 1890s. Cool. We told her usually we dig 75 of them before getting an embossed one. Lol. She kept plugging away and came upon what we thought was a mason jar. I told her you don’t have to be too careful with that as they are usually broken or not rare. I no more than turned around to hear Don say “What is that?” Well he kinda yelled it out in excitement. I looked and saw immediately that it was an Eagle Flask. Thank God I kept my composure as I had my phone in my hand already and snapped the photos of the biggest grin on her face. She had no idea what she had just pulled from the earth or it’s value or historic preservation. But Don and I did. Holy Cow we were both jumping up and down and screaming what just happened!!!! Did she just pull a Double Eagle Flask out as her first privy dig and only her second bottle. YEP, she did. The pics were awesome but what a proud moment for her Dad to see her excitement and be alive to see it. What a fantastic memory to have for the rest of my life.
I could not ask for better kids and I certainly would only dream of something like this to happen. A freaking Double Eagle Flask. Wow. The day ended with her also digging a half pint Eagle Union Clasped Hands that was broke as well as a turtle ink that was broke. After some cleaning I found that the flask is dang near perfect. No cracks dings or case wear at all. Just the usual haze. And it appears to be a GII-128 variety although only listed in half pint and hers is the pint size. A fairly Rare mold but even more Rare for a rookie diggers second bottle that really makes her Dad proud every single day. Love this hobby, Love you Ali. Wow!!!
